The City of Alameda announced today that City Council is suspending parking meter fees on Saturdays in the Park and Webster Street districts between Thanksgiving and the end of the year.

The City is asking, however, for shoppers to observe the posted time limits to free-up spaces for others to park.

Parking meters originated in the 1930s to mitigate parking space congestion; that innovation necessitated another – so-called “meter maids” to enforce limits.

The Saturday’s this holiday season declared as meter holidays are November 24th, December 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th.
