Sandy Hook Tragedy Touches Alameda

More than two dozen people attended a candlelight vigil on the steps of Paden Elementary School this evening, to honor the memory of those killed yesterday at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, and to call for an end to gun violence.

Reverend Laura Rose of the First Congregational Church of Alameda attended and led the group in prayer and song. Two of her cousins attend Sandy Hook Elementary and managed to get out of the building safely after the shooting started.

The vigil was organized by Catherine Egelhoff, of Alameda, who said that the most important thing for people to take away from the proceedings was the need to speak out and make their voice heard. “In the wake of this horrific tragedy, I think it is so important that we stand witness, and commit to trying everything we can to have this never happen again,” she told Action Alameda News.

Action Alameda News captured these pictures from the vigil.
