The Alameda Unified School District is planning a series of meetings to gather community input on the future of the Alameda High School Building that, until recently, housed the district administrative offices.

The District caused controversy last year with its decision to fence off and vacate the Alameda High School building for seismic retrofits, and move District administrative offices to leased space in the Marina Village business park.

The move followed the passage of a parcel tax, Measure A, in 2011, billed as providing funding for classrooms, and angered the teachers union, which led a school board election campaign last fall that elected two out of three of its sponsored candidates, and removed Ron Mooney from the board after only one term.

The district moved into its new offices at 2060 Challenger Drive earlier this month; the move alone was budgeted at roughly $29,000.

The newly comprised school board voted late last year against exercising an option in the lease agreement to purchase the Challenger Drive property. The district says it needs roughly 22,000 square feet of space for its administrative offices.

Now, the school district is hoping to build community support to exercise a second purchase option in the agreement, which they need to decide on by the end of September.

The plan is to hold a meeting of Alameda High School stakeholders, and two subsequent broader community meetings to gather input.

The school board would make a decision in May on the future of the high school building and long-term location of the district’s administrative offices.
