A gushing press release from the Commission notes that the sign “hearkens back to the glory days of travel.” A similarly enthusiastic video (included below) explains how the Italian-made sign took two-years to make and was designed by the same firm that designed the train departure signs for Grand Central Station in New York City.
“This unique element of MTC’s Regional Hub Signage Program serves ferry passengers and celebrates the renovation of the popular San Francisco Ferry Building 10 years ago. The flap sign is a new tool for travelers and a distinctive addition to a beloved transportation landmark,” said Anne W. Halsted, MTC commissioner and vice chair of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC).
The Commission expects that the sign, by providing departure information inside the ferry building, will eliminate sprints to the ferry departure gates.
