First 5 Alameda County, a public agency funded by Proposition 10 cigarette tax revenues, has purchased a building in Marina Village and plans to relocate to Alameda by the end of April.

Proposition 10, passed by California voters in 1998 created the First 5 California, California Children and Families Commission, to support children from prenatal to age 5. Proposition 10 added a 50 cent per-package tax on cigarettes and comparable taxes on other tobacco products.

In Alameda County, the program is administered by First 5 Alameda County Every Child Counts; the agency is currently based in San Leandro.

However, by the end of April, it should be relocated to Alameda.

Mark Friedman, CEO, First 5 Alameda County told Action Alameda News, “We are excited about finding a permanent home in Alameda and moving our operations there. We purchased the building at 1115 Atlantic Avenue and plan to move in our 57 employees on April 19. Our new home is approximately 21,000 square feet and includes one large community conference room and three smaller ones which are available free of charge to partners who serve families with children 0-5, and can be rented by others. Many of our employees live in Alameda and many of our community partners are centered nearby. We’re confident that the move will prove beneficial to our work: building a system of coordinated programs throughout the County that enable children to begin school healthy, ready and able to learn, and emotionally well developed.”

The new location is roughly one-half mile from Alameda Unified School District’s new offices at 2060 Challenger Drive, also in Marina Village.
