Alameda Police Chief Michael Noonan has announced his retirement. (City of Alameda)

Alameda Police Chief Michael Noonan has announced that he will retire on June 1st, 2013.

By that date, he will formally have served as Chief of Police for just under two years; one of City Manager John Russo’s first official acts was to promote Mr. Noonan from Interim Police Chief in mid-June, 2011. Noonan had held the Interim Police Chief title since July of the previous year, following the departure of Walter Tibbet.

Noonan was the interim chief on Memorial Day, 2011, when Raymond Zack died in the water off of Crown Memorial Beach, as public safety officials stood on the beach and waited for a boat. He subsequently gave a public apology for his departments role in the incident, which made national headlines.

He has served with the Alameda Police Department for 27 years.

Captain Paul Rolleri will serve as Interim Police Chief following Noonan’s departure. Noonan will serve as a consultant to the City of Alameda for six months following his departure.
