The Alameda Unified School District announced yesterday that members of the Alameda Education Association (AEA), the union representing teachers in the district, has voted to ratify a tentative contract. The agreement now goes on to the Board of Trustees for approval.

According to a statement from the school district, teachers will receive a 2.5 percent retroactive ongoing raise for all of the current school year (2012 to 2013), an additional .75 percent ongoing raise in 2013 to 2014 and a 1.25 percent one-time increase for 2013 to 2014.

Teachers would then receive an additional 1.75 percent ongoing raise in 2014 to 2015 unless the school district determines it cannot afford that increase. The school board will hold a public hearing on that salary increase by January 31, 2014.

Including the additional 1.75 percent increase in 2014 to 2015, teachers would receive a total ongoing salary increase of 5 percent over three years.

The agreement also includes a stipend for speech and language pathologists and moves Career Technical Education teachers to the main teacher salary schedule.

By April 30th of this year, the teachers union will vote on two options for calendars for the 2014 to 2015 and 2015 to 2016 school years.

The agreement keeps Kindergarten through Grade 3 class sizes at a maximum of 25 students through the 2017 to 2018 school year.

It also provides that children of AUSD teachers can attend AUSD schools, with the teacher’s assigned school of employment treated as the child’s neighborhood school.

The Board of Trustees is set to vote on the agreement at the March 19th meeting, next week.
