The Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees is expected to approve tonight a $6,925 contract for former city council candidate Jeff Cambra. Mr. Cambra is to facilitate a series of meetings and interviews about the fate of the historic Alameda High School Building.

At its March 14th special meeting, the Board of Trustees reviewed an agenda item regarding “community engagement around the fate of the historic Alameda High School building.”

Last year, the school district made a controversial move by re-locating its administrative offices from the building to newly leased space in Marina Village. Teachers slammed the move, saying it drew on funds that would be better spent on classrooms.

Now, by the end of May, the district wants a report and presentation on outreach to stakeholders about what to do with the facility, which has been fenced off in the name of seismic safety. Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker was also named as a facilitator in the process, but it’s unclear if she is volunteering her time or if she will be paid like Mr. Cambra.

In justifying Mr. Cambra’s hiring, the district cited his past employment as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Hayward, his Juris Doctorate from the John F. Kennedy School of law, and his “extensive mediation facilitation training.”

In November last year, Mr. Cambra came in fourth in the city council race, with 15.59% of the vote, and was edged out of three vacant council seats.

The district has scheduled a series of community input meetings through April and early May.
