Alameda’s Perforce Software announced a new enterprise version management software product yesterday intended for use by company-wide business teams. Until now, the company has been known primarily for software versioning tools used by engineering and development teams.

The new product is called “Commons.”

In a media release from Perforce, a software engineering manager for tech company Amdocs indicated that his firm is rolling out Perforce products across the entire company, including business teams and less technical staff.

Perforce claims that the product can save business teams significant time and trouble in locating, editing and collaborating on documents. Commons includes imaging capabilities for the most common document types, such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

To support the product announcement, Perforce also released the details of a study conducted online by Harris Interactive, which shows that 83 percent of knowledge workers lose time to document versioning issues each day, and that 73 percent of those surveyed spend time searching their hard drives or email in-boxes for the most up-to-date or correct file.

The company says that Commons is available for up to 20 users at no cost.
