The City of Alameda has established a process for boat owners to get their property for Nelson’s Marine at Alameda Point. (Google Street View)
In announcement posted to its website, the City of Alameda says it wants to give owners access to their property while preventing derelict vessels from being pushed into the bay.
The city plans to inventory and photograph any property removed from the yard. City of Alameda representatives will also try to establish if vessels are indeed seaworthy, and questionable boats may be referred to the U.S. Coast Guard. Boats deemed not seaworthy by the Coast Guard will have to be trucked off the property. No work will be permitted on the property.
The city has also identified pre-approved trucking companies to remove boats from the yard. Owners that choose to use a company not on the pre-approved list will have to provide proof of insurance.
According to the City’s announcement…
To Claim Any Property, you must…
- Provide the City in advance with a list of the property you are claiming and retrieving
- Sign and return a turnover agreement
- Have a valid photo ID
To Claim a Seaworthy Vessel, you must…
- Provide the City with a recent DMV or Coast Guard printout demonstrating that you are the owner of the vessel and confirming that there are no liens or competing claims of ownership of the vessel
- Provide proof of insurance for the boat
- Provide proof of current registration for the boat
- Sign a turnover agreement
To Truck a Vessel off the Premises, you must…
- Provide the City with a recent DMV or Coast Guard printout demonstrating that you are the owner of the vessel and confirming that there are no liens or competing claims of ownership of the vessel
- Sign a turnover agreement
- Provide the City’s legal representative with authorization for the trucking company to remove the vessel off the premises
- If you use any trucking company other than those pre-approved by the City, that company must provide insurance and sign the City’s property access agreement
Requisite forms are available on the City of Alameda’s website.
That yard is one hellacious mess. I guess the city is stuck picking up the tab for the clean up. Good luck getting any money from Nelson’s owner.
