A light rain and a U.S. Navy color guard kicked off a ceremony today to convey over 1,300 acres of land at Alameda Point from the United States Navy to the City of Alameda.

For those without umbrellas, the ceremony was mercifully short, clocking in at around 35 minutes.

Congresswoman Barbara Lee congratulated the residents of Alameda, and promised to continue her support until redevelopment of the former Naval Air Station Alameda is complete.

Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore promised jobs, both ongoing and transient construction jobs, and City Manager John Russo promised continued community involvement in the redevelopment effort while still moving with haste.

Both used race analogies, noting that the conveyance of the land puts Alameda at the starting line of a new step in the redevelopment effort.

Former KPIX Channel 5 reporter Sherry Hu officiated the ceremonies, which culminated with Roger Natsuhara, Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore sitting down to sign a ceremonial transfer document.

Action Alameda News captured this video and these pictures from the event.
