If you heard a series of loud booms around noon today, it was likely the 21 gun salute to Independence Day, courtesy of the United States Coast Guard Alameda.

The Coast Guard routinely performs such salutes on national holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, explained Chief Gunners Mate Robert Taylor, who commands the salute battery on Coast Guard island, facing Alameda across the estuary. The guns will also fire on Coast Guard command changes, or the death of a sitting or former United States president.

The battery consists of two 40mm salute guns that fire blank shells which produce only a lot smoke and a report that bounces back across the water from the Grand Marina.

For the Fourth of July, the guns are fired at five second intervals.

Any ships in port are also fully dressed with flags for the holiday, as was the national security cutter USS Waesche today.

Action Alameda News captured these images of the salute and the practice drill that prefaced it.
