An off-duty Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy shot and killed an armed robbery suspect last night at the Bonfare Market at High Street and Santa Clara Avenue.

Alameda police say a second suspect is believe to have been wounded; that man fled the scene and police have searched the area and are checking local hospitals to find him.

Police say that just after 10:30 p.m. last night, they received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting an armed robbery in progress at the store, and the sound of gunshots.

On arrival, police made contact with the sheriff’s deputy, who had been shopping inside the market when the attempted robbery began. A police statement says that a confrontation between the deputy and the robbers took place, and the deputy, fearing for his safety and that of the store employees, shot and killed one of the robbers, and possibly wounded the second.

Nobody else was injured.

Investigators are collecting evidence and processing the scene. The Alameda Police Department said that High Street between Central Avenue and Liberty will be closed until noon today.

The market was robbed just eight days ago, and police are also investigating if there is a connection to last night’s events.
