Alameda Point Town Center Ideas Before Planning Board Tonight

alameda-town-center-aug-2013Public dialog before the City of Alameda Planning Board about what the area around the Seaplane Lagoon at Alameda Point may look like continues tonight.

The goal is to create a plan for a town center at Alameda Point that mixes commercial, residential and recreational uses within a convenient walk to the waterfront and public transit.

Streets, open space, and the breakdown of uses for different zones are all part of the discussion.

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the urban design consultant hired by the City of Alameda, is suggesting that there is some low-hanging-fruit to be picked by building on some existing uses at Alameda Point to stimulate interest in the projected new Town Center. For example, the Seaplane Lagoon can support kayaking and sailing, and urban camping might provide unique opportunities to enjoy nighttime vistas. (There is a campground with about 20 sites on the south shoreline of Alameda Point that has fallen into disrepair.)

City of Alameda planning department staff will turn public comment and planning board input into a draft Framework Options document and take it back to the public and community groups for further discussion.

The meeting starts tonight at 7:00 p.m. in council chambers at Alameda City Hall.

That would be so awesome if they restored the old campground over there! Imagine waking up to the gorgeous views of the bay and cooking your breakfast outside.
