A man was arrested on suspicion of arson in the early hours this morning, after a fire burned through a two story apartment building on Briggs Avenue.

Alameda firefighters arrived at the scene at 2:50 a.m. this morning to find the second floor and roof of a two-story, four-unit apartment building at the back of the lot engulfed in flames.

All active Alameda fire companies were eventually called to the scene, and the Oakland and Alameda County fire departments were called for mutual aid to assist at the scene and cover the emptied Alameda fire stations.

One man, a building occupant, who was aided in his escape from the second floor by firefighters with a ground ladder, was arrested by Alameda police on suspicion of arson.

Seven occupants of the building were displaced, and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, and investigation into the cause of the fire continues. Damage is estimated at $800,000.
