Council Expected to Approve Cowan Rezoning

Developer Ron Cowan wants to build an office building, instead of a restaurant, at this Bay Farm Island site.

Developer Ron Cowan wants to build an office building, instead of a restaurant, at this Bay Farm Island site.

On Tuesday, January 21st, Alameda City Council is expected to approve a rezoning application that would see a parcel on Bay Farm Island be rezoned to permit construction of an office building, instead of a restaurant.

The parcel, owned by Ron Cowan’s Harbor Bay Isle Associates (HBIA), was originally intended to be a restaurant, and was marketed as such for 25 years. However, no operator ever bit on the opportunity to develop the 1.17 acre shore front property with views across the San Francisco Bay.

There is, however, according to HBIA, significant interest in developing the site for office building use.

The proposed change would rezone the property from from Open Space to Commercial Manufacturing with a Planned Development Overlay. (Restaurant uses are conditionally permitted in an Open Space zone.)

The civic street address of the parcel is 2350 Harbor Bay Parkway.

Too bad, a restaurant would have been awesome there. Why the heck do we need more office buildings? Especially one right on the shoreline. Aren’t there enough vacant office buildings in Alameda and Harbor Bay already? So now just a few people will get to enjoy the views of the bay from their cubicles instead of many people dining and enjoying the views. They could have even made an outdoor dining area right on the bay. What a concept, a waterfront restaurant on an island? Darn shame.
