Planning Board Design Review for New Emergency Operations Center

The City of Alameda is moving forward with plans for a new Emergency Operations Center on Grand Street.

The City of Alameda is moving forward with plans for a new Emergency Operations Center on Grand Street.

On January 27th, the City of Alameda Planning Board will hold a design review hearing to consider a new Emergency Operations Center on Grand Street.

In 2012, Alameda voters rejected Measure C, a proposed local sales tax increase, the proceeds of which would have been used to fund the construction of the Emergency Operations Center, and other projects.

The new operations center would be located on the current site of Fire Station #3, on Grand Street; a future design review would consider a proposal for a replacement fire station for that site.

Since the failure of Measure C (2012) at the ballot box, the City of Alameda has been seeking other funding sources for the projects.

The proposed two-story, 3,640 square foot Emergency Operations Center building is intended to be the primary support facility for response to major public safety incidents or a major disaster.

The center would support up to 50 emergency response personnel including those from the Alameda Fire Department, Alameda Police Department, Department of Public Works, the City Manager’s office and other city departments as the situation demands.

In the past, the Alameda Fire Department has indicated that it would need to hire at least one emergency response coordinator to staff the facility.

The hearing will take place in city council chambers at Alameda City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave.

Doesn’t seem like a good place for this. Should be next to or near City Hall or the Police Station. What do the the neighbors around this residential area think about a huge building being built next to them? I think the idea is good, just not the right spot.
