Google-owned Makani Power Expands Lease at Alameda Point

google-makaniMakani Power, a wind energy company owned by Internet search giant Google, has renewed its lease at Alameda Point, with additional space.

The company had been leasing 17,000 square feet of space in a former airplane hanger at the old naval station.

Yesterday, the City of Alameda announced that Makani had renewed its lease for up to 21 years, and added 110,000 square feet of space. The lease also gives Makani/Google the first right of refusal on an additional 367,000 square feet of space in the next-door hangers, if and when those buildings become available.

The city also granted the company an option to purchase the buildings.

Makani makes airborne wind turbines. Google made sequential investments in the company, ultimately acquiring it outright in early 2013.
