An announcement on Friday afternoon from Community Learning Center Schools Board President Joan Uhler that Nea charter school lead facilitator has been placed on administrative leave has local parents outraged.

Nea Community Learning Center, a K-12 public charter school and Alameda Community Learning Center, a 6-12 public charter school, are sister schools under Community Learning Center Schools, Inc. (CLCS) a non-profit corporation.

Just before 4:00 p.m. yesterday, Nea Executive Director Patti Wilczek sent an email to parents with a statement attributed to CLCS Board President Joan Uhler, explaining that the CLCS board voted, apparently Thursday evening, to Maafi Gueye, Nea’s lead facilitator, on administrative leave.

Also put on leave was Lina Miura, Nea Chief Operating Officer. The e-mail gave no reason for either administrative action.

The move sparked outrage among parents on an online forum set up for Nea families, with some parents calling for a student strike and protest, and others declaring their intention to pull their children from the school.

Daniel Davenport, a Nea parent, told Action Alameda News, “It is weird, awkward, and disturbing when details are not given concerning public education. Today I learned my children’s principal was placed on administrative leave but no one has told me: why?”

On the forum, one parent speculated the move was intended to better enable a merger of ACLC and Nea, and another stated that the organization is governed by “a top down, white centric model is outdated and runs counter to the NEA principles.”

Yet another reported that at the March 20th CLCS board meeting, Gueye and Miura filed “formal complaints” against CLCS, for unstated reasons, and that the board was taking action to prohibit paid employees such as Gueye and Miura from serving on the governing board.

The statement from Joan Uhler indicated that for the reminder of the school year, Patti Wilczek will oversee Nea’s Upper Village, and Assistant Lead Facilitator Annalisa Moore will oversee Nea’s lower village.
