Friends of Crown Beach Submit Petition Signatures

Friends of Crown Beach have submitted their petition signatures.

Friends of Crown Beach representatives said yesterday they have submitted to the City Clerk’s office more than 6,300 signatures on a petition intended to “preserve the 3.89-acre surplus federal property next door to Crab Cove (and Alameda’s Crown Beach State Park) for park expansion by rezoning it from Residential to Open Space.”

The groups expects that the signatures are enough to get their open space initiative, “Initiative for Expansion of Open Space at Crab Cove,” on the November ballot.

A key purpose of the initiative is to rezone the 3.89-acre piece of federal property from multi-family housing to open space use.

The initiative would take effect upon passing, and is necessary, proponents say, to “enforce the will of the voters of the City of Alameda as expressed in November of 2008.”

Proponents say that in that election, more than 70 percent of Alameda voters approved Measure WW, which implemented a tax bond measure, enabling the East Bay Regional Park District to acquire property for park land.

The park district operates Crown Memorial Beach just across the street (McKay Avenue) from the federal property, and has long coveted the federal land for an expansion of the existing park.

After the City of Alameda re-zoned the property for multi-family residential use, in anticipation of developer Tim Lewis Communities acquiring the parcel, the park district took the matter to court.
