The USS Hornet Museum will host a special Memorial Day ceremony that will include a commemorative wreath-toss and the presence of a special guest: 101-year-old Capt. Moon Chin who flew Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle to safety during WWII Tokyo Raid.

Gregory Crouch, the author of “China’s Wings” will also attend as a featured speaker.

Crouch will talk about the USS Hornet’s (CV-8) role in the Doolittle raid, and make note of China’s assistance and sacrifices.

The B-25 bombers that left the deck of Hornet for the Tokyo raid flew on to China, and most of them eventually landed or crashed there.

Most of the crew members that landed in China eventually made it to safety with the help of Chinese civilians, but the population paid a heavy price – the Japanese killed some 250,000 civilians in retaliation.

A commemoration of the Doolittle raid on-board the museum in April was marred when a man took the microphone during a question and answer session with U.S. Navy veteran Richard Nowatzki and expressed his outrage over the Chinese civilian deaths.

The formal Memorial day service will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 26th, and will be led by retired U.S. Navy Cmdr, Chaplain John Berger.
