The Alameda Police Department is ready to spend up to $80,000 to purchase mobile Automated License Plate Reader systems.

The Alameda Police department is ready to spend up to $80,000 on four squad-car mounted Automated License Plate Reader systems. The matter comes before City Council next week.

The police department wants to buy four, vehicle mounted, 3-camera automated license plate reader systems from Vigilant Solutions, of Livermore, CA.

According to a supporting letter in the city council packet, “Vigilant Solutions currently loads over 42,000,000 license plate records per month of mostly stationary (parked) vehicles from key geographic regions. By the end of 2012, the size of the private LPR network reached a benchmark of over 1 billion detections records.”

The Alameda Police Department secured a grant to purchase the technology through the Bay Area Urban Security Initiative, a program of the federal Department of Homeland Security.

Alameda City Council gave the department approval to seek grant funding last October.

The police department expects to store data collected through the systems for six months, unless, “it is reasonableto believe it will become, evidence in a criminal or civil action or is subject to a lawful action to produce records,” per a draft use policy.
