Groups Partner for Bay-friendly Car Washes

Through its Clean Water Program, the City of Alameda Public Works Department is helping local groups run Bay-friendly fundraising carwashes through commercial carwashes.

Commercial carwashes collect and treat waste water before discharging it to the sewer system, which then carries it to wastewater treatment plants.

Ad-hoc carwashes tend to release runoff directly into the storm sewer and then on to San Francisco Bay, untreated.

City of Alameda officials say that commercial carwashes use less water as well. They cite numbers from the International Carwash Association that peg a ten minute carwash using a garden house as using more than 100 gallons of water, which a high-pressure wand at a commercial wash uses twelve gallons per three-minute cycle, or 36 to 40 gallons for the same ten minutes.

Public works officials have arranged for two upcoming fundraising carwashes to be held at Follow Charlie Car Wash at the corner of Everett Street and Buena Vista avenue.

  • Saturday May 17th from noon to 4:00 pm, organized by Alameda Pirates Football & Cheer
  • Saturday May 31st, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, organized by Alameda High School Senior Class
