Maddie’s Fund will cover the cost of adopting pets from the Alameda, and other, animal shelters over the weekend of May 31st and June 1st.

Dave and Cheryl Duffield of Pleasanton started Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days in 2010, based on more than $300 million of their own money contributed to a supporting endowment fund.

Maddie’s Fund was named in honor of the Duffield’s miniature schnauzer, Maddie.

David Duffield founded software company PeopleSoft; Oracle Corporation announced a $10 billion acquisition of PeopleSoft in late 2004.

Adopt any dog or cat at a Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days participating shelter, and the fund will pay for all adoption fees and further donate $500 to the shelters. Shelters will get $1,000 for each senior pet adopted, and $2,000 for each senior pet with special needs.

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS) will operate two adoption locations on both May 31 and June 1.

The Alameda shelter located at 1590 Fortmann Way, Alameda, will be open with extended hours, from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition, there will be a satellite adoption booth at the Bay Street Shopping Center, 5616 Bay Street, in Emeryville. The satellite booth will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days.

A FAAS representative said that, this year, almost 65 puppies, dogs, cats and kittens are available for adoption.

FAAS has a number of additional freebies to hand out with each adoption.
