An ambulance transport program operated on a pilot basis for the past two years by the Alameda Fire Department is set to become a permanent service offering.

Basic Life Support ambulance transport is generally used to transfer persons who require medical attention between medical facilities such as hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and specialized treatment facilities.

The Alameda Fire Department has been running a pilot program to see if it can make a business out of providing Basic Life Support transport services.

By contrast, Advanced Life Support services – what most people think of when they call for an ambulance in an emergency – is focused on critical care and life-saving activities.

City Manager John Russo is recommending that, based on the results of the pilot program, the city establish the ‘basic life’ transport service as a regular service of the Alameda Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Division.

The pilot program began on July 1, 2012 with one ambulance and two technicians, and expanded in October of last year, with the addition of a second ambulance and additional part-time technicians.

The matter comes before Alameda City Council on Tuesday, June 17th.
