The USS Hornet Museum has hired Tom Hyland, of Alameda, as the museum’s director of development; his goal will be to keep the museum financially afloat.

According to a media release from museum officials this morning, Hyland will oversee fundraising and stewardship operations for the aircraft carrier, a registered state and national historic landmark.

The hiring represents the first formal fundraising program for the museum.

A 30-year philanthropic veteran, Hyland has raised more than $40 million, museum officials say, for numerous causes, including education, medical research and equipment, indigent health care, social services, and the arts.

“We are extremely pleased to have Tom Hyland join the Hornet leadership team,” said Randall Ramian, chief executive officer of the USS Hornet Museum. “Tom’s extensive experience will enable him to focus on reaching out to existing and potential donors to ensure that their philanthropic support of the USS Hornet Museum is properly administered and acknowledged, and that all donations provide the maximum benefit.”

Hyland will work on the organization and implementation of policies and procedures for the museum, and budgeting and long-range planning.

He graduated with a B.S. in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens, OH.
