Two fifth graders from Franklin Elementary School have won an essay contest, “Why I want to be an astronaut when I grow up,” sponsored by the USS Hornet Museum.

The contest, which was open to all fifth graders in public schools within Alameda, was part of the museum’s upcoming “Splashdown 45” celebration commemorating the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Mission.

Grace Teuscher and Khushi Randez were selected based on the creative merit of their essays, explaining why they would want to be an astronaut.

The USS Hornet was the prime recovery ship for the Apollo 11 lunar mission, in 1969, helping to recover the astronauts and their capsule from the Pacific ocean on their return to Earth.
