The 31st Annual national Night Out is Tuesday, August 5th, 2014.

This year, National Night Out is Tuesday, August 5th. The program is intended to strengthen neighborhood relationships and community-police relations.

Participants in the program are encouraged to organize a neighborhood BBQ, potluck dinner or other social event, and spend the evening outside, “taking back” the night from crime.

Residents are asked to leave exterior lights on and lock their doors while at their neighborhood event.

The Alameda Police Department is accepting night-out event registrations until July 31st; groups that register will receive a visit from public safety officials and McGruff the Crime Dog.

Registration is free.

One neighborhood in Alameda that reliably participates in National Night Out is Woodstock Homes, a co-operative community of over 500 homes in West Alameda.

Woodstock Homes is holding its night-out event at the Woodstock Homes Corporation office at 1711 Second Street, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5th; Officer McGruff is expected to make an appearance.

An estimated 38 million people participated in National Night Out last year, from all 50 states, United States territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide.
