It was looking like a second term by acclamation for Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore, as she was the only candidate to have pulled papers to run for Mayor in this fall’s election. But then two other candidates showed up at the city clerk’s office.

On July 29th, Leland Traiman pulled filing papers from the clerk’s office. Traiman unsuccessfully ran for the hospital board in 2012, and then last month, filed, and subsequently withdrew, papers to run a shadow campaign to dog Mike McMahon’s re-election efforts to the Alameda Unified School District Board of Trustees.

And yesterday, Trish Spencer, a six-year veteran of the school board, pulled papers to run for Mayor.

Early this morning, Spencer posted to her Facebook page, “Guess who’s running for Mayor of Alameda? I’ve been fortunate to serve on the School Board for 6 years and, after serious consideration, decided to pull papers today (due Thursday) at City Hall.”

Spencer’s entry to the race promises to make interesting a fall mayoral campaign in a town where city hall-electeds, even though they don’t oversee the school system, talk about it a lot.

Should Spencer win in November, she would leave a vacancy on the school board.

In addition to Mike McMahon, and Solana Henneberry, newcomer Gary Lym has filed with the Alameda County Registrar of Voters as a candidate for the school board.

Four candidates are running for three seats on the hospital board, formally known as the City of Alameda Healthcare District Board of Directors. They are the three incumbents, Lynn Bratchett, Robert Deutsch and Tracy Jensen, and newcomer Jim Myers.

The nominating period for city hall-electeds ends at close-of-business this Thursday, August 7th.
