Alameda pet owners should soon be able to book wellness exams with local vets through Nibbol. (Action Alameda News)
Nibbol.com, based in San Francisco, was founded by four self-described “pet parents” and is intended to make scheduling veterinary visits with reputable veterinarians easy.
“My terrier-chihuahua mix, Potter, passed away last May from Cushing’s disease, a hormonal disorder,” said co-founder William Do. “I couldn’t stop asking myself, ‘what if I had visited the vet for preventive care annually? Could I have detected the disease earlier and helped Potter live longer?’”
The Nibbol team investigated and found research showing that more than 67 percent of dog breeds carry genetic disorders and that 31 percent of randomly selected dogs had chronic illnesses that could be screened and treated early by way of regular wellness exams.
The company also says that young pet owners don’t regularly take their pets to vets for preventative care due to busy work schedules, uncertainty about costs, and the difficulty in finding high quality veterinarians.
Nibbol co-founder Alex Poms told Action Alameda News that Alameda Pet Hospital and Providence Veterinary Hospital, both in Alameda, should be available for bookings through the service in the coming weeks.
“We think encouraging preventative care in animal healthcare is an incredibly important issue,” Poms said.
The company hopes that by making it easier to book wellness visits, more pets will benefit from more routine examinations.
Michael Miller, doctor of veterinary medicine with Providence Veterinary Hospital, had not responded to inquiries by press time.
