The City of Alameda is moving forward on a proposed task force to study and report on the state of housing and rental pricing in Alameda.

Local housing advocates, such as Renewed Hope, have been pushing the City of Alameda to adopt a rent control ordinance; the real estate industry has been pushing back.

At next week’s City Council meeting, City Manager John Russo will present a proposal for a seven-member task force to study the state of the residential housing market in Alameda, the impacts on rental rates of rent control ordinances in other jurisdictions, what changes may be needed to Alameda’s Rent Review Advisory Committee, and other related issues.

The task force would convene in October, and work for six months, effectively sidelining the rent control ordinance question for the duration of an election season that has two candidates vying for the Mayor’s office, and three candidates competing for two council seats.

In May or June of next year, the task force would present its final report.

Additionally, the city would hire a consultant at an estimated cost of $35,000 to conduct supporting research and analysis for the task force.

Members of the task force would come from organizations with an interest in the rent control ordinance question.
