Traffic Collision Jams Interstate 880 Traffic Just South of Alameda

An early morning traffic accident snarled Interstate 880 for hours at commute time.

An early morning traffic accident snarled Interstate 880 for hours this morning.

A traffic collision in the wee hours this morning on Interstate 880 sent nine people to local hospitals and fouled traffic in both directions for hours, the California Highway Patrol said.

Just after 3:00 a.m., a Honda CRV travelling southbound connected with a metal guardrail and came to a stop in the southbound lanes, near Marina Boulevard.

A southbound big rig swerved to avoid the CRV, but collided with, and drove through, the concrete center divider, into the northbound lanes.

The truck traveled across the northbound lanes and jack-knifed, colliding with the sound wall on the eastern edge of the highway, strewing debris across the road.

Still more vehicles traveling in both directions collided with stopped vehicles and debris in the roadway.

When the dust cleared, nine people were sent to hospitals, and Caltrans was cleaning up the scene and repairing the center divider.

Several lanes of the freeway were closed during the morning commute.

By 9:30 a.m., all lanes on Interstate 880 in both directions were re-opened.

The California Highway Patrol said the cause for the sequence of collisions is still under investigation.
