Supporters of an adolescent drug and alcohol abuse treatment center at risk of closure are getting behind a petition addressed to Governor Jerry Brown, Attorney General Kamala Harris and Alameda County officials, asking for help to keep it open.
According to the petition, Sutter Health plans to close the 30-bed Thunder Road Adolescent Treatment Center as a cost-cutting measure.
A mission statement on the center’s web site says its purpose is “to assist youth and their families in the challenges to recover from the abuse of drugs and alcohol.”
The center is accredited by the international Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Sonia Stuart, of Alameda, who works at the facility, told Action Alameda News, “I have worked here in Thunder Road for the last 15 years and have seen everything in action how this program has changed so many people’s lives.”
The petition is also signed by other Alameda residents, including at least one who attests to the efficacy of the center’s programs based on direct experience.
Change.org is hosting the petition online.
