The United States Navy Reserve celebrated one-hundred years of service today, including a ceremony on board Cape Orlando, one of the ready-reserve ships perpetually berthed at Alameda Point.

Alameda Mayor Trish Spencer was on-hand to proclaim the day as navy reserve day in Alameda, and receive an award recognizing Alameda’s support of naval reservists.

Reading from prepared remarks, Spencer said of reservists, “they are our parents, grandparents, sons and daughters, teachers volunteers, mentors, neighbors and co-workers…every day navy reservists including those here in the city of Alameda make a difference and we value their efforts.”

The event was attended by sailors attached to the Cape Orlando, reservist families, and representatives from area employers who also received recognition for their support of reservists and their families.

Alameda hosts one of the few navy reserve centers left in northern California, as consolidation has closed them down in various cities.
