The California Highway Patrol, Oakland, has released the following media statement regarding a vehicle collision on I-880 at 23rd Avenue in Oakland last night:
“Yesterday at approximately 6:30 p.m. we received multiple calls for a collision on 880 at 23rd Ave. When units arrived on scene they located a multi vehicle collision and a large section of fencing on both sides of 880. Due to the debris and vehicles blocking the roadway, both sides of 880 were shut down for almost an hour as power tools were needed to disassemble the fencing.
“We have determined that approximately 460 feet of fencing fell off the 23rd Ave overcross, which struck a total of 10 vehicles. One of those vehicles did catch on fire but the driver escaped without injuries. The people in those 10 total vehicles were transported to local hospitals for minor injuries. At this time we are still investigating what caused this fencing to fall into the freeway.”
