Central Avenue Project Scheduled for Transportation Commission Hearing

The Central Avenue project comes before the Transportation Commission later this month.

A controversial plan to remove vehicle travel lanes from a portion of Central Avenue comes before the Transportation Commission in a public hearing next week.

The project promises safety improvements, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists, but questions remain about whether or not the changes will provide improved parking for disabled persons.

The proposed changes would reduce travel lanes from four to three along a stretch of Central Avenue between Main Street at Pacific Avenue and Sherman Street at Encinal Avenue; one of the vehicle lanes would be a center turn lane.

City officials say that reducing vehicle travel lanes from four to three will minimize motorist delays that are expect to increase, assuming all planned citywide development is built.
