The program, called “Friends Connect” is an activity based social club that meets at the Underground Teen Center and provides participants with the opportunity to socialize, build friendships, explore the larger community and have fun. Participants will engage in activities such as arts and crafts, recreational and social games, and cooking.
There will also be field trip activities like bowling, miniature golf, going out to eat or to the movies, and to the arcade.
The recreation and parks department is introducing the program as a pilot, for tween’s and teens with moderate disabilities and moderate social challenges who will benefit from a designed social outlet; the pilot program has a limited number of spaces.
If the program is successful, it may be expanded.
Applications for the program are available in the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department office on Santa Clara Avenue starting today. Online enrollment is not available.
There will be an open house for all applicants on Sunday, January 10, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Underground Teen Center in the veterans building at 2203 Central Ave.
