The rain is projected to continue through the week as a Christmas Day full moon coaxes from the ocean the final king tides of the year.

King tides are forecast for the Bay area from today through Thursday, and the current storm is expected to taper off tomorrow, with rain returning on Thursday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website notes that king tides are likely to be even higher this year, thanks to the El Niño weather pattern, increasing the chances of flooding in low-lying areas.

Chances of flooding are increased when the king tides coincide with coastal storms.

The forecast for Friday, Christmas Day, projects mostly sunny skies.
