CHP Explorer felony traffic stop exercise. (California Highway Patrol)

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is holding an open house for young adults ages 15 through 21 who may be interested in becoming a CHP Explorer.

The program offers an introduction to law enforcement, and provides the opportunity for participants to proceed through a modified training program similar to what officers go through at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento.

Participants can also join in competitions with Explorer posts nationwide, and successful completion could lead to a full-time CHP career.

Explorer activities include:

  • Ride along with officers in the field
  • Assist with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoints
  • Explorer competitions
  • Medical training
  • Physical fitness training
  • Regular meetings

Applications must have a 2.0 grade-point average, not use drugs or alcohol, and have no felony arrests or convictions, and must be in good standing with their school/work/family.

The open house takes place on February 18, 2016 at 5:00 p.m., at the California Highway Patrol’s Oakland area office on Telegraph Avenue in Oakland.

To RSVP for this event or to find out more, call the CHP at 510-450-3821 or e-mail Sergeant Kittell at
