Yesterday, the Alameda Renters Coalition filed a notice of intent to circulate a petition to put a rent control measure on the ballot.

The ordinance, if enough signatures are collected to put it on the ballot, and it passes, would amend the city’s charter to, among other things, create an elected rent control board, limit rent increases to 65 percent of the annual increase in the local Consumer Price Index, and require landlords to pay tenants anywhere from $7,300 to $18,300 when terminating tenancies under certain conditions, such as an owner move-in.
