San Francisco-based BuildZoom has launched an online database and mapping tool that tracks Alameda building permits, contractors and costs.

The data in the free tool is built on information from the City of Alameda building department.

Using the map, one could, for example, look up the permit history for 721 Santa Clara Avenue, a property owned by a local restaurateur who wants to convert the house to a restaurant; the proposed conversion has been the subject of some spirited discussion on local online forums.

BuildZoom analyzes trends in the construction industry and helps property owners source contractors to do work.

Jiyan Wei, a BuildZoom founder, claims to have captured a complete 10-year history of Alameda remodeling and construction projects in the database.

The company says its goal is to “improve the consumer experience in the remodeling and construction industry, which lacks transparency and accountability.”
