The Alameda Free Library is planning a screening of “This Day Forward,” the story of a father coming out as transgender.

Filmmaker Sharon Shattuck was in middle school, a difficult time for any child, when her father came out. Years later, as the Shattucks reunite to plan Sharon’s wedding, she seeks a deeper understanding of how her parents’ marriage, and their family, survived intact.

Shattuck is a filmmaker and animator, and the co-creator of The New York Times Op-Docs series “Animated Life,” which tells stories of scientific discovery using stringent journalism and paper puppets.

Her video and animation work has appeared in The New York Times, PBS, Slate, ProPublica and Radiolab. She has degrees in environmental science and journalism. From This Day Forward is Sharon’s feature-length directorial debut.

Her film will screen on September 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the main library, 1550 Oak St. Alameda in the Stafford Community Room.
