Alameda residents received a large color glossy mailer over the weekend, encouraging them to vote “no” on Measure M1, the renters coalition-sponsored rent control measure, and instead vote “yes” on Measure L1, the city-sponsored rent control measure.

It’s unclear who was responsible for the mailer, however.

The disclosure at the bottom of the piece read “Paid for by Real Rent Control for Alameda, Yes on L1, No on M1” but there was no identifying Fair Political Practices Commission identification number.

Neither the city clerk’s office nor the Alameda County Registrar of Voters website had any record of a committee organized under that name.

The Webster Street return address printed on the mailer matches that of Prospect Mortgage.

An e-mail to one John Knox Carnahan, listed as a loan officer for the firm, went unreturned as of press time.
