This month, the Alameda Public Works Department and the West Alameda Business Association (WABA) will conduct a deep cleaning of the sidewalks along both sides of Webster Street from Central Avenue to Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway.

The work will be done in the late evening and early morning hours to minimize the interruption to businesses and visitors.

City officials say the so-called “deep cleaning” is more effective than regular pressure washing and will remove built up grime as well as gum deposits and discoloration of the sidewalks, including areas surrounding public litter cans.

In early 2014, then-Mayor Marie Gilmore, announcing a sidewalk cleaning “bake off” to select a new contractor, said that Alameda’s sidewalks had been filthy for years.
