Alysa Liu, 2016 U.S. intermediate national figure skating champion opened the rink with a performance, as did Ashley Clark, 2016 U.S. open champion and three time U.S. gold medalist. Clark also posed for pictures with attendees.
The Oakland Bears, a youth hockey team, scrimmaged as a demonstration, but the sluggishness of the puck confirmed that the ice is better suited to recreational skating.
Shopping center officials claim the rink is the largest outdoor one, at 4,100 square feet, between the Bay Bridge and the Caldecott Tunnel.
The rink is open daily to as late as 10 p.m., until January 8th, 2017.
