Library Offers Fine Amnesty Program

The Alameda Free Library is offering a fine amnesty program through the month of June.

From June 8 through Saturday, July 8, anyone with an Alameda Free Library card can have their fines waived in exchange for nonperishable boxed or canned food, which will be donated to the Alameda Food Bank.

Food items should be brought to the check-out desk at any of the three Alameda libraries during open hours.

There is no minimum food donation requirement or limit to the amount of overdue fines that can be waived per account; however, food donations will not waive any accrued collection or lost material fees.

A list of accepted food items can be viewed online at alamedaca.gov/library/food-fines2017 or at any branch location.

The last time a food amnesty program was offered was in 2013.

The program is a collaboration between the Alameda Free Library and the Alameda Food Bank.

The library expects to collect at least two thousand pounds of food in return for waived fines, feeding at least 80 families through the food bank.
