Alameda Firefighters Union Has Filled Leadership Vacuum

Dear Editor,

Here are two letters to the editor that I have sent to the local papers:

We are all to blame

As outrageous as what happened on Memorial Day weekend at Crown beach is, we, the citizens of Alameda are all to blame at some level. I for one who is a dues-paying, card-carrying member of the International Association of Fire Fighters and a retired member of a local fire department have watched a succession of placeholder Fire Chiefs lose control of the Alameda Fire Department by lack of action, self-serving policies and very little interest in our community. In the last ten years, we have had at least as many odd ball and in some cases plain incompetent leaders.

Dear Editor:

Where are the cops when people are speeding down every street (including in school zones), running red lights and stop signs, and failing to stop for pedestrians?

Yes on A Campaign Filing Complaints

[Editor note: Bolding and italics are present in the original...]

Dear Editor:

The pro Measure A folks have filed a complaint about a letter I wrote. Their complaint states:

“In the last three years, Alameda has had two parcel tax elections in which the outcome has been determined by a very small number of votes. This could be true of the upcoming election.”

They take umbrage at my words “Call and email at least 10 of your like minded friends, relatives and neighbors and remind them of their civic responsibility to Vote… Offer to drive friends, pick up absentee ballots and hand deliver them to the City Clerk.” Please note, I am not on any committee and do not know who all the members are of either committee, nor have I received any economic benefit from either side.

Don’t Just Sit Back and Do Nothing on Measure A

Dear Editor:

One way for good people to lose is to sit back and do nothing. Normally supporting schools means supporting the children and that is a great thing for everyone and our future. Not so in Alameda. We have a district with too many administrators, administrating too many sites, with too many bricks, too much mortar and not enough students. Too much money is spent on hotel rooms for administrators, campaigns and recruiting out of district students. Not enough is spent on education, not enough focus on quality for the children. Giving the district more money rewards and perpetuates this inept administration.

Time for Alameda SOS to Celebrate? Not so Fast.

By Dennis Green

Two huge, full-page ads endorsing the school parcel tax, Measure A, printed in the Alameda Journal and Alameda Sun, and signed by Harbor Bay developer Ron Cowan! What a coup for AUSD and SOS! And all those endorsements by the City Council and the business organizations, except PSBA. Time to celebrate? Not so fast.

Measure A and Reduced Class Size

Dear Editor,

AUSD argues that it needs another $12 million in parcel taxes, on top of the $73 million per year it already receives, in part to preserve “class size reductions.” They say that smaller classes permit greater individual attention to the students.
