Revitalize Alameda Point – SunCal Even Duped Alameda Sympathizers With Revitalization Initiative

Critics of SunCal’s Alameda Point Revitalization Initiative have often been pejoratively, and mistakenly, labeled “anti-development” and needlessly distrustful of the “big bad developer.” But it’s coming to light, as SunCal tries to slink away from Alameda back to SoCal, that they duped even their most ardent sympathizers within Alameda. Perhaps now some of those who hurl these insults understand why Alameda residents deserve to be skeptical about developer promises.

Revitalize Alameda Point – Unconfirmed: Alameda City Council to Modify SunCal Initiative and Put it On November Ballot

Update, 6:00pm, June 27th, 2009: Response from Kate Quick, President of the Alameda League of Women Voters:

Well, there is some editorializing and a bit of opinion in Bill’s statement. But essentially, the dialogue did take place, and Lena did say that due to some changes in the conditions now in discussions with the Navy, there may need to be changes to the wording of the initiative, but they may be not substantive. She indicated that there are a lot of possible ways the process could go, enumerated them, and did not endorse any specific course of action. I don’t think the discussion of alternatives means that any of them are necessarily going to happen. I felt that there were many uncertainties in the discussion and it was left that many things could possibly happen.

I do not think it is wise to jump to any conclusions based on this discussion. Kate

Original article:

We were in the midst of writing an article (which we expect we will still publish next week) on how Alameda City Council, the Planning Department, and other actors in Alameda were duped by SunCal into believing that the developer was going to bring forth a simple “change Measure A for Alameda Point” initiative. Then we got an email, from which we excerpt a paragraph below, which shows, if true, just how desperate and pathetic some City Council members are.

Alameda Wine Company Must be on the Brink of Failure Before the City of Alameda Allows Operating Hour Changes

SunCal Feeling the Heat in New Mexico Over Television Ads

Here’s a sneak preview of what we can expect from SunCal as we get closer to the November ballot and their attempt to change Measure A. SunCal may be violating New Mexico state lobbyist laws with their TV ads and highway billboards pushing legislators to approve over $400 million in state tax-increment financing to [...]

City of Alameda Now in Auto Racing Business

A reader and Porsche owner tipped us off to this upcoming event at Alameda Point, on the old airfield – Porsche Club of America autocross racing at Alameda Point. The Porsche Club Golden Gate Region proudly announces on their website that:

We are excited to see our first 2009 autocross coming together. As planned, it will be at the Alameda venue on March 21.

Evidently the City is not satisfied with lawsuits over the death of Dr. Attari in the estuary at the foot of Grand Street, or the Nuveen and Vectren lawsuits over Alameda Power & Telecom’s failed telecom division. Now they want to generate some more lawsuits from some weekend-warrior Porsche owner injuring himself or others during a race at Alameda Point.
