Action Alameda News has added a news feed, “Notes from Alameda Hospital,” to our site, visible on the right inner sidebar of this page, roughly mid-way down. This feed originates from the “Notes from Hospital” blog written by Alameda Health Care District Board Member Elliott Gorelick.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced yesterday that twelve California hospitals have been assessed administrative penalties for failure to comply with licensing requirements, the result of which caused, or was likely to cause, serious injury or death to patients. Alameda Hospital was one of the twelve penalized.

It might come as a surprise to many of you, but your parcel tax money isn’t being used to shore up Alameda Hospital any more. The District just borrowed $900,000 against our expected parcel tax revenue to lease space for and construct a Wound Care Clinic at Marina Village.

A July 12, 2011 memo from Alameda Hospital Chief Executive Officer Deborah Stebbins, obtained by Action Alameda News through a public records request, explains that former Hospital Chief Financial Officer (CFO) David Neapolitan left his role at the Hospital “by mutual agreement,” effective July 15th. The departure has cause the Hospital to seek a new permanent CFO to replace Mr. Neapolitan.

Although I exposed the substandard 2007 Alameda County Emergency Medical Services stroke transport protocol in an October letter in your publication, kudos go to Mayor Johnson, Interim City Manager Anne Marie Gallant, and the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services (ACEMS) Director Dale Fanning who all worked quickly – overriding the hospital’s protest – to get this changed in under two months. As of 12/1/2010, our ambulances transport stroke victims to certified stroke centers. Record time, I’d say!

Dr. Robert Deutsch, M.D., a member of the Alameda Health Care District Board of Directors, which oversees Alameda Hospital, has denied that his presence on the board of the District which has oversight over the Hospital with whom he contracts to provide services to represents a conflict of interest.

Documents obtained by Action Alameda News indicate that, effective Wednesday, December 1, 2010, Alameda County will terminate an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) policy that called for paramedics to take stroke victims in the city of Alameda to Alameda Hospital, even though the Hospital is not a certified stroke center. The change in policy has been confirmed by the Alameda County Health Services Agency.
