Alameda Hospital “After 4-hours” Window for Stroke Victims Makes No Sense

Dear Editor,

Although I exposed the substandard 2007 Alameda County Emergency Medical Services stroke transport protocol in an October letter in your publication, kudos go to Mayor Johnson, Interim City Manager Anne Marie Gallant, and the Alameda County Emergency Medical Services (ACEMS) Director Dale Fanning who all worked quickly – overriding the hospital’s protest – to get this changed in under two months. As of 12/1/2010, our ambulances transport stroke victims to certified stroke centers. Record time, I’d say!

Battani’s Mis-leading Response to Op-Ed

Dear Editor,

On October 27th you published a commentary by Jordan Battani, President of the City of Alameda Health Care District. Ostensibly it was a reply to Denise Lai’s earlier commentary regarding the systemic failure of Alameda Hospital. Ms. Battani’s reply was cleverly constructed to dodge the issue which is that Alameda Hospital, as presently constituted, provides sub-optimal care to the people of Alameda who pay for that “privilege” to the tune of 5.7 million dollars per year.

Battani Dodges the Facts

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express dismay for Jordan Battani’s commentary published last week. I’m a little stunned that Ms. Battani did not apologize to Denise Lai in her commentary, nor take any responsibility for the substandard care at Alameda Hospital that almost cost Denise her life, a life I would personally hate to see come to an early end. As the president of the Alameda HealthCare district, Ms. Battani can be expected to show some concern for the well-being of a patient. Instead, Ms. Battani chose to spout tired bureaucratic platitudes, distort the truth and dodge the facts.

Reader Stands by Her Assertions About Alameda Hospital

Dear Editor,

In her open letter, the Alameda Healthcare District’s board director Jordan Battani calls my recent op-ed rumor and innuendo. She wants facts.

Regarding my personal experience at the hospital this summer:

Fact One: The Alameda ER written report that details the very real physician and nurse failures that nearly killed me…and the doctor’s documentation errors…he listed me as a child brought in by her parent! I assure you, I am not a child!

Fact Two: The Alameda Hospital bill of $10,000+ for the ER visit and for imaging later that same month; all was comped; I did not pay one dime.
